spoiltpig meets new wave of consumer demand
24th January 2009

The launch of Denhay Farms’ RSPCA Freedom Food approved spoiltpig bacon coincides with new findings that 69% of consumers in the UK are concerned about animal welfare when shopping.  This compares with 49% of consumers being concerned about whether the product they are buying is British, and 40% noting whether it is a local or regional product.

George Streatfeild of Denhay Farms comments: “Consumer behaviour is always changing; a few years ago the trend strongly leaned towards organic, then it progressed to local and concern about food miles and, whilst this is still ongoing, we are now seeing a greater emphasis on animal welfare.  Widespread celebrity chef campaigns provoke these changes, and then ultimately it is up to the consumer to sustain them, based on their own long-term ethics.

Our new spoiltpig bacon is a product we are immensely proud to launch as it is our first bacon to carry the RSPCA Freedom Food mark.  spoiltpig pigs are reared outdoors with free access to a wholesome, nutritious diet and they are also provided with clean, dry and comfortable bedding.  We believe that consumers deserve to know that the food they are buying is of the highest standards, not just in terms of quality and taste, but also consistent and humane levels of animal welfare.”

spoiltpig is made to traditional methods by Denhay and is dry cured by hand using sea salt.  Denhay’s knowledge and skill in producing bacon has resulted in the Company winning awards each year – a total of over 38 medals since 2000 of which 22 were Gold - from the Country’s top food award schemes.

John Akehurst, Marketing Controller at Freedom Food explains:  "There is no doubt that consumer demand for higher welfare products, such as bacon and free-range eggs, is at an all time high as people become more aware and concerned about the provenance of their food.

“Denhay makes the only Freedom Food accredited Cheddar in the Country, and we are delighted that the Company has integrated our beliefs and ethics into its new product development with spoiltpig bacon.  The Freedom Food stamp provides consumers with reassurance and reinforces credibility within the supply chain."

Denhay’s spoiltpig Dry Cured Back Bacon is available in 250 Morrisons’ stores across the UK, RRP £2.69.
